He enters the canon from Season 2's finale, when he returns to NYC after his business trip to California.
Don Draper was born in a brothel to a prostitute mother. He was named Dick Whitman after his mother’s rather brutal last words. Dick grew up dirt poor with parents he later found out were adoptive. He joined the army and was shipped to a remote outpost digging ditches where he and his commanding officer, Donald Draper, came under mortar attack and Draper was killed. Whitman took Draper’s identity and never looked back.
Shortly after “leaving” the army, Don became a car salesman and it was then the widow of the real Donald Draper found him. Instead of having him prosecuted for fraud, she accepted his offer of monetary and emotional compensation. They remain friends even after his marriage to Betty, a former model. Betty and Don had two kids, Sally and Bobby. Don is a partner at Sterling Cooper, a boutique advertising agency on New York’s Madison Avenue, the basis for the nickname, “Mad Men”. He is not fully satisfied in his marriage as Don is a womanizer who will indulge his passion almost at a moment’s notice. He was busted in his infidelity when Jimmy Barrett, television comedian, informed Betty that Don and his wife Bobbi were getting frisky.
Don has taken being secretive to another level. No one, his wife Betty nor the other Mrs. Draper knows him well. No one knows his background and those that get close, like Pete Campbell, find themselves on the receiving end of a cold tongue lashing. Don is a wordsmith extraordinaire, prone to Zen-like moments of inspiration to either bag an unsure client on a campaign, talk himself into a woman’s bed or out of trouble. He is smooth, debonair and resistant to change although he will embrace it when it suits him.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Don is leading man handsome with jet black hair slicked back with a healthy dose of pomade, over six feet tall, broad shouldered and square of jaw. His blue eyes can draw you in or shut you out, depending on the time and his mood. He is in good physical condition despite a constant indulgence of tobacco and alcohol.
